Dachshunds - History

Whatever the origin of the breed, Germany is considered its motherland. The breed was first popularized in this very country. Dachshunds were used as companions. The drawings of these dogs can be found on paintings dated as far back as the 15th century. However, the main function of the Dachshund has always been hunting the badger. The breed's physical qualities and ability to take decisions on its own allowed it to pursue small game in burrows. Dachshunds were also good at hunting squirrels, rabbits, foxes, and other animals.

Smooth-haired Dachshunds were widely spread in Europe in the middle centuries. As the interest in the breed grew, breeders produced other varieties of the breed that could be used in winter. By the 1890s, the population of the breed increased significantly. Dachshund breeders and owners realized the necessity for developing breed standard. The standard was meant to give a clear-cut idea of what a good Dachshund should look like and what working qualities it should display. The first breed standard was developed in 1879. In 1880, the first Stud Book appeared in Germany. Five years later, the AKC recognized Dachshunds, which was instrumental for the breed's popularization in the United States.
