Though Dachshunds are popular dogs and can be easily available, it is wise to be slow when choosing a puppy. One does not have to be a specialist to understand that the quality of the puppy depends much on the type of the breeder by which the puppy is raised. Therefore, it is essential to make sure the breeder is responsible. Needless to say, determining whether the breeder is responsible or not is not easy.
It is recommended to ask for health certificates. Dachshunds can suffer from inherited diseases such as back and eye problems. It is advised to ask about seizures, hearth diseases, and other health issues. All the puppies should be vaccinated to ensure that they do not get affected in the early stages of the development.
Reputable breeders usually register their litters with clubs and breed organizations. This allows them to take part in club-sanctioned events and be informed on all the aspects of Dachshund ownership. To be eligible for trials, a Dachshund should be purebred. Altered dogs are not allowed to take part in shows. Therefore, if you are planning to take part in shows, you have to buy a purebred registered puppy. Puppies that come with a spay/neuter contract are not eligible to enter specialty events.
It is also good if the breeder is willing to keep track of the puppy's future. It may seem that raising a Dachshund is not difficult. However, there may arise problems that can be handled with the help of an experienced Dachshund owner. Hence, determine if the breeder is eager to take care of his Dachshunds' future life.
