Dachshund Adoption

Dachshund adoption is a noble deed. Since this breed is very popular nowadays, many people attracted by the image of these cute dogs buy a puppy on impulse and don’t have an idea about what to do with it to make it obedient and well-behaved. When a Dachshund puppy grows up and becomes difficult to control, such owners surrender it to the rescue.

Dachshund adoption is a challenge, as most surrendered dogs have behavior or health problems. Usually such dogs were obtained from pet stores or backyard breeders who did not care about their health and stable temperament. Only a small percentage of surrendered dogs were given up through no fault of their own, but because their owners had financial or personal problems that made it impossible to keep a dog any longer.

When considering Dachshund adoption, you have to learn much on the breed’s typical personality, keeping requirements, exercise needs, and possible problems. Choose a rescue dog very carefully. Ask rescue workers or foster owners about the personality of the dog and communicate for some time with it. Dogs available for adoption should not display aggression to humans. All family members should meet the adoptive prospect.

Prior to taking a new pet home, take it to the vet to evaluate health issues and vaccinate it if necessary. Establish a safe area and a crate for it. All rescue dogs live in cages, so it helps minimize the stress of getting into the new environment. When outside the crate, the dog should be supervised for several weeks. Even if you adopt an adult dog, treat it like a puppy until it earns your trust. Basic obedience training is a must for every rescue dog. Even if you’ve adopted a well-behaved dog, spend some time training and socializing it in an obedience class. If the dog was abused as a puppy, it may be shy around strangers. It’s the new owner who has to work through the problem. Second-hand dogs sometimes need more attention than puppies bought from a breeder. Dachshund adoption is not a way to get a purebred dog and save money; it’s a serious responsibility.
